Ironic, no
Imagine you’re a kid, and before a family gathering you say “I don’t want to go.”
And instead of getting curious with you, your parents say “Don’t be selfish.”
Do you think you’ll grow up trusting that a simple “no” is enough?
Or believing that you need to defend yourself every single time?
Now you say yes to events you don’t want to go to. Then show up resentful, or cancel last-minute.
The heartbreaking part is that you’re so afraid of disappointing others, that you end up constantly disappointing yourself.
The mindf*ck is that selfishness isn’t wanting what you want. It’s hiding what you want.
Because you may think you’re hiding it - but people can still feel it, even unconsciously. And now they have to guess at it.
This means that learning how to speak your truth on what you want is the most generous thing that you can do.
