Very crucial to reassess priors

When you refuse to reason from first principles and cling to dogmas, you accumulate cognitive dissonances. And every unresolved dissonance is a process running in the background in your brain, draining your energy.

The mechanism has been known since Festinger in the 50s. When reality contradicts what you believe, your brain enters a state of tension. It has two options to get out of it: update the belief, or defend it. Updating happens once. Defending happens continuously. You have to rationalize, filter out disturbing information, avoid certain conversations, tell yourself stories. Every new fact that contradicts your dogma restarts the process.

The brain hates what's unresolved. It keeps open loops in active memory. It's exactly like an app running in the background on your phone: you don't see it, but it's eating your battery and slowing down everything else. The result is diffuse stress, rumination, and a huge amount of mental energy mobilized to maintain a facade of coherence instead of understanding the world or creating.

Parasitoid wasps inject eggs into a caterpillar. The larvae hatch, eat the host’s insides, and hijack its brain to make it do their bidding. Still looks like a caterpillar from the outside, but it now exists to serve the parasite. This is what online gambling has done to sports.

From the outside everything looks the same. You still have the athletes running around the field, the talking heads chattering in their studios. But the entire mission of professional sports has been reoriented toward gambling. Everything is dictated by the needs of the parasite.
